Exhibition spreads Kindness through Canberra

RMIT Gallery’s exhibition, Kindness/Udarta. Australia-India Cultural
Exchange, will open in Canberra tomorrow (31 May), as part of the
Australia-India Council’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

More than 117 writers and visual artists from Australian and India are
involved in the exhibition, along with more than 23 musicians.

RMIT Gallery Director Suzanne Davies said that the response in India,
where the exhibition premiered in March, had been tremendously
positive.

In honour of the 20th anniversary, Ms Davies, who is an Australia-India
Council board member, co-curated the exhibition and accompanying
publication Kindness/Udarta. Australia India Cultural Exchange with Dr
Alka Pande from the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre.

Dr Karan Singh, President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations,
inaugurated the exhibition and launched the publication on 16 March at
the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Ms Davies said that the contributing artists to Kindness/Udarta
represented a significant sample of creative people who had experienced
each other’s culture, visited each other’s country, worked together,
and built relationships based on friendship and mutual respect.

Kindness/Udarta. Australia-India Cultural Exchange will be held in
Canberra until 7 June. It will then open at RMIT Gallery in Melbourne on
28 June, with a special Indian cultural celebration on Thursday, 2
August. The exhibition will end on 25 August.

“As RMIT is a globally-focused university, we felt that having such
an evening of cross-cultural celebration involving writers, artists and
musicians would be a wonderful way of bringing staff, students and the
community together to experience each other’s cultures and
traditions,” Ms Davies said.

Celebrated Indian author Kiran Nagakar will participate in the event,
along with author Christopher Kremmer. Both experienced the inspiration
of each other’s culture through the AIC exchange program. Both writers
participated in the exhibition’s inauguration in New Delhi.

Kindness/Udarta. Australia-India Cultural Exchange is taking place at
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Level 1 Atrium), RG Casey
Building, John McEwen Crescent, Barton, Canberra.
