Members of the Afghanistan Cricket Team on September 25 met with the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Hon Julie Bishop, during their current tour in the country, designed to help the squad acclimatize ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The Afghanistan national cricket team arrived in Canberra as part of their high performance tour of Australia and New Zealand in preparation for next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

Members of the team visited parliament house on invitation from Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop. The minister met with the players and expressed her support for the rapid rise of cricket in Afghanistan.

Ms Bishop said, “I believe the mutual love of cricket between the Australia and Afghanistan combined with Afghanistan’s appearance that the World Cup provides a welcome opportunity to strengthen ties between the two nations.”

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said, “The support from the Australian Government is a huge boost to the growth of the game in his country.”

Afghanistan will play two matches against the ACT Comets at Manuka Oval this week before departing for New Zealand.
