Chris Cowen MP, Shadow Treasurer, Member for McMahon

The Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen will visit India this week where he will participate in the World Economic Forum which will focus on economic growth and development in India and the region.

Mr Bowen will also be taking the opportunity to participate in bilateral meetings with key officials in the new Indian administration and opposition, including the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and other senior Asian officials attending the World Economic Forum.

India is one of Australia’s closest international partners and friends.

India is Australia’s eleventh largest trading partner and fifth largest export market, with Australia’s goods exports to India totalling $9.5 billion in 2013.

Two-way investment flows have been of increasing importance, with Australia investing about $7 billion in India.

And while the economic dimension is of increasing importance to both countries, what lies at the centre of the Australian-Indian relationship is the people-to-people links, with other 400,000 people of Indian descent calling Australia home.

The Rudd and Gillard Governments elevated the relationship with India to an official Strategic Partnership.

Tony Burke will be acting Shadow Treasurer during this time.
