Synopsis: Young Dilsher grew up in the heartland of Punjab. His father sang hymns in Gurdwaras, and Dilsher, who was deeply attached to his father followed in his footsteps. Music meant everything to them and for the young boy music and faith were intertwined. God was music and music was God. But when Dilsher’s father dies suddenly, the young, impressionable boy loses his way. He abandons his faith and the music dies.

By the time Dilsher is older, all he wants is to make it big, to become rich, to be someone. He moves to the throbbing metropolis of Delhi, where he becomes obsessed with the idea of entering the world of the mighty real estate tycoon, Gurcharan Sikand or Guru, also originally from Punjab. Dilsher manipulates his way into Guru’s world and Guru recognizing Dilsher’s hunger and ambition, takes an instant fancy to him. But the closer Dilsher gets to achieving his dream of making it big, the more ensnared he gets in the twisted and violent world of the rich. It’s a world where everyone is a pawn and nothing is what it seems.

Meanwhile, Dilsher meets Amira, a beautiful and talented singer who is also battling her demons. But she heals her pain through music and as Dilsher and she come closer, she starts to evoke the long denied memory of music in him, making him realize that music is not just his calling, but also his balm. As the music gushes back into Dilsher’s life he understands that it is not money, but music that he was born to make. That music is not just his language, but it is also the language of the universe. Music is currency. And, so begins Dilsher’s catharsis.

But by now he is trapped in the web of  manipulations and to get out, there is a heavy price to pay. Set against the backdrop of Sikhism and Music, Zubaan is a story about identity. It is the coming age journey of a young man from faithlessness to faith, from dark to light, from noise to music.

Love Punjab – Releases March 11th

Produced by: Amarbir Singh Sandhu, Karaj Gill, Jaspal Singh Sandhu

Language: Punjabi (English Subtitles)

Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lTWvdYxUMk

Synopsis: The story revolves around the impact of an upcoming divorce on a young child and to what extent the parents will go to ensure, he doesn’t lose his innocence. Lead stars, Amrinder Gill and Sargun Mehta play parents to Manvir Johal, a 12 year old second generation Canadian Indian who is still coming to terms with his heritage and Indian roots. Like most kids of colour, he is a victim of racism from his classmates and begins to dislike school, but home isn’t any better with his parents constantly bickering. All this tension and anxiety causes a nervous breakdown. The story takes a comic turn when the father announces they are going to Punjab, to help the child understand his heritage. Before their arrival, all the relatives in Punjab, India, are informed and the village undergoes a huge ‘western’ makeover, while still holding all to all the Punjabiness, to ensure the boy sees only the best things about the place. Love Punjab is a story that will resonate with every Indian diaspora family who work hard at holding on to their roots and still ensure their children grow up as normal kids do in the west. It shows you the extent to which a family will go to ensure their child is happy and that marriages take a lot of work. Most of all, it will reinforce the view that home is truly where the heart is.

Kapoor and Sons (Since 1921) –  Releases March 18th

Director: Shakun Batra

Cast: Alia Bhat, Fawad Khan, Sidharth Malhotra, Rishi Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Supriya Pathak

Produced by: Dharma Productions

Language: Hindi with English subtitles

Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7YYt9_KfsM

Synopsis: Rahul and Arjun have returned back home- to Coonoor, to be with their grandfather in (what they think will be) his last few days, after he has a heart attack at the age of 90. Rahul, for his age, seems to have built a pretty good life for himself; a good looking man, doing very well professionally, living in a swanky apartment in London, and also planning to pursue architecture along with writing. On the other hand is his younger brother- Arjun. Arjun is also an aspiring writer, living in New Jersey, clearly struggling to make ends meet.

These two brothers aren’t exactly the ”˜inseparable’ brother duo we are used to seeing in our movies. The awkwardness and tension between them is apparent from the word go. Their arrival in India quickly unfolds their individual relations with their parents as well. Rahul is clearly the perfect one, loved by all, Arjun seems like the neglected one who according to the family is too immature/irresponsible to take decisions.

The brothers arrive in India to find that their little family isn’t as perfect as they had imagined. Their parents no longer sleep in the same room and their father seems to have developed a relationship with a long time family friend, which is making their mom uncomfortable.

Arjun has an old friend in Coonoor who helps him get out of the steaming pot environment in his house. One night, the friend takes Arjun out for a party to a friend’s place, which is where he meets Tia. Tia is a, attractive, flamboyant, young girl who Arjun instantly strikes a chord with. Rahul meets Tia as well, regarding a business deal they are trying to strike, and even here, there is a certain equation right from the word go. We see the onset of another point of tension between the brothers- a love triangle.

As the story unfolds, we realise that all the characters have had their fair share of mistakes and bad decision. The family members who seem perfect aren’t necessarily so, and the ones who seem imperfect have had good reasons for their actions. Are the brothers able to bring back normalcy to their house? Are they able to resolve their own issues? What happens to the Tia-Arjun-Rahul trio? Is the grandfather able to get the perfect ”˜family photo’ he’s been striving for? The answer to all these questions and many more forms the crux of the story.
