Deep Saini appointed President and VC of University of Canberra
Prof. Deep Saini, Vice-President of the University of Toronto, Canada and Principal the university’s campus in suburban Mississauga, has been appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra, Australia.
He takes up his new job on September 1.
Saini is a highly acclaimed plant physiologist who did his Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide. He said about this appointment: “I will be returning to the country where we essentially began our lives when I started my Ph.D at the University of Adelaide 38 years ago ”“ almost to the day.”
“We (his wife Rani is included when he says we) are viewing this as a five-year ”˜foreign assignment’, even though Australia is anything but foreign to us,” Saini told The Indian Diaspora.
According to Prof. Tom Calme, Chancellor and chair of the University of Canberra’s Council, they are delighted the internationally experienced university leader and academic has agreed to become theUniversity of Canberra’s fifth Vice-Chancellor.
“Professor Saini’s outstanding academic pedigree and vast international experience will be key to delivering on our vision to be recognized as one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions world-ranked, with regional, national and international reach,” Calme said in a statement.
Under Prof. Saini’s leadership, “it will be an exciting period for the University of Canberra and I look forward to working with Prof. Saini towards this new phase.”
