Perth Mint’s one tonne gold coin is world’s largest gold bullion coin
In 2011, The Perth Mint achieved an incredible triumph with the successful casting of the world’s largest gold bullion coin, the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin, inspired by the enduring popularity of the annual Australian Kangaroo Bullion coin Series.
Tipping the scales at a massive one tonne of 99.99% pure gold, the colossal coin is a magnificent Australian icon symbolising one of the Mint’s most extraordinary accomplishments since it was established in 1899.
Measuring some 80cms wide and more than 12cms deep it is the biggest, heaviest and inherently most valuable gold bullion coin in the world, estimated to be worth more than AUD50million.
Initially, the challenging task of creating this mammoth coin was undertaken to create a showpiece to promote the Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Series worldwide. Upon its return from an exclusive tour across Asia and Europe in 2014, the monumental coin is now on permanent display in The Perth Mint’s dazzling Gold exhibition and is considered the major drawcard for visitors to the Mint.
In 2012, the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin was awarded the title of the ”˜largest coin’ by Guinness World Records. Recognition from the authority of record-breaking achievements is testament to the vision, dedication, and attitude of Perth Mint staff who were faced with an incredible challenge to produce a coin of this size and scale.
As the pinnacle of the Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Series, the coin showcases the classic artistry by Dr Stuart Devlin AO CMG, goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which has featured on each annual 1 kilo release in the series since the kangaroo design was introduced in 1989.
The reverse design depicts a bounding red kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight, and bordered by the inscription AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO 1 TONNE 9999 GOLD and the year-date 2012.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the monetary denomination of 1 MILLION DOLLARS.
