Sydney to witness ‘Gardish Mein Taare’ play based on Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt’s life
‘Gardish Mein Taare’ features Sonali Kulkarni and Arif Zakaria
After the successful Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar’s ‘Kaifi Aur Mein’ earlier this year, SAI Creative Arts Network ( SCREAN ) Australia now proudly present a nostalgic play ”Gardish Mein Taare” based and inspired by the great film director Guru Dutt and his wife/singer Geeta Dutt.
Guru Dutt directed some of the best black and white film classics of the Hindi cinema namely ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam’ and his wife Geeta Dutt a talented singer famous for her soulful silky voice sang famous songs of Hindi cinema – ‘Babuji dheere chalna’, ‘Waqt Ne Kiya kya haseen sitm’, ‘Bhanwra bada nadaan hai’, ‘Jaane Kya tune kahi’, ‘Aankhon hi aankho mein ishara ho gaya’ and many more. Geeta Dutt’s Bengali songs include ‘Shachimata Go Char Juge Hai’, ‘Ekhan-O Dustar Lajja’, ‘Ei Sundar Swarnali Sandhyay’ and ‘Tumi Je Amar’ filmed on beautiful Suchitra Sen . Geeta Dutt’s voice carried a lilt in her voice and sang evocatively in her enchantingly sultry voice which endeared her to masses in songs like ‘Mera sundar sapna beet gaya’, she was equally at ease in devotional numbers such as ‘Ai ree main tau prem diwani’ or even cabaret numbers. She was chosen by the great S.D. Burman as the main singer of his compositions but due to her personal problems Geeta was not able to deliver to high standards demanded by the music director.
The brilliance of Dutt couple was a gift to Indian cinema yet their personal life and relationship faced many a rough road. Geeta Dutt’s music came straight from her heart, she poured her emotions and feelings into every note. And this passion did not fail to reach the audience. But on the personal front, her heart was going through turbulence with her marriage falling apart as Waheeda Rehman came into Guru Dutt’s life and disturbed their marital harmony.
‘Gardish Mein Taare’ play is based on their life story with actress Sonali Kulkarni playing Geeta Dutt and actor Arif Zakaria (of film ‘Raazi’) plays the part of Guru Dutt. This commercially successful Hindi Play has been helmed by director Saif Hyder Hasan. It is set in the 1950s with it’s grand setting, great visuals and soulful music.
The play ‘Gardish Mein Taare’ comes to Sydney on Saturday 14th July 2018, at SIR JOHN CLANCY Auditorium, UNSW 7 pm.
