DMK Patriarch M. Karunanidhi, 5 time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, dies at age 94

Chennai:  Nothing embodies the vibrancy of Indian democracy than the rags-to-riches story of M Karunanidhi, the five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu. When he started off, he was the underdog among underdogs. Money power and caste influence determine success in politics in post-independent  India, but Karunanidhi reached dizzying heights in Tamil Nadu with neither.

The flood of eulogies and the outpouring of sadness that have followed Karunanidhi’s death is proof to his significance not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Indian politics – A national mourning has been declared with National flag will flying half mast in Delhi and State capitals.

TN government announced seven day mourning and a day’s holiday on Wednesday for the final rites. All Who’s who – the VIPS plus Tamil Nadu’s mass following attended the funeral   to bid an emotional farewell to their   leader – five times chief minister. RIP   – The veteran leader was buried in Marina Beach near the DMK founder/mentor Annadurai.
