Two classy performances at Bunji Place not to be missed

Guru of Chai

July 23, 24; Venue: Bunjil Place Studio

Beginning as a chai-wallah at an Indian train station, Jacob Rajan weaves a solo tale playing 17 different characters. Guru of Chai is not to be missed!

In the swirling buzz of a railway station, a young girl is abandoned and brings the place to a standstill with a beautiful song. Among the throng is a poor chai-wallah (tea-seller) and in that sweet moment his life is turned upside down.

See Guru (Jacob Rajan) a bucktoothed chameleon, channeling seventeen different characters and dispensing questionable spiritual wisdom as he plays out a serpentine tale of impossible love and modern-day magic.

Guru of Chai is a show for all ages!

Sid Sriram in concert

August 2; Venue: Bunjil Place Studio

Sid and the best of Chennai are bringing their unique style of classical Indian music to Melbourne for the first time!

Much acclaimed as a classical vocalist, song writer, producer and playback singer, Sid Sriram is a household name globally amongst South Asian communities. Being one of the few artists to have feet successfully placed across Carnatic and other genres, Sid is part of a new generation of unique and hybrid artists.

Sid will be accompanied by some of Chennai’s most sought after musicians; Sri H N Bhaskar on Violin, Sri Patri Sathish Kumar on Mridangam and Sri Shree Sundarkumar on Ganjira.

Sriram was born in Chennai, India. His family moved to the San Francisco/Bay Area suburbs when he was one. This duality of cultural roots was integral in forming Sriram’s personal and artistic identity. He graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Production and Engineering; here is where he started exploring and building his own sound. Sid Sriram’s music creates a bold cross section where Pop/Soul, his Indian Classical roots and alternative/ambient music clash vibrantly.

This concert is brought to you by GEETHAANJALIE, School of Carnatic Music.
