Gurinder Chadha’S new film ‘Blinded by the light’ in cinemas this week

Javed (Viveik Kalra) is a Pakistani teenager who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. He writes poetry as a way to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the stubborn views of his traditional father. When a classmate and a new friend, turbaned Sikh Roops (Aaron Phagura) introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteeen, Javed sees parallels between the singer’s powerful lyrics and his own working-class environment. Springsteen’s melodies soon inspire Javed to find his own voice and follow his dreams. Gurinder Chadha wrote the script with her husband Paul Mayeda-Burges and Sarfaraz Manzoor, a Bruce Springstein fan, who wrote his memoir in ”˜Blinded by the light’, of a kid from the mean streets of Luton in Thatcheristic era of 1987, the racism, the anti-immigrant nationalism and the bullying and caught between a father who works like a slave, Javed tries to write the lyrics. In this journey, Javed discovers a teacher, Ms. Clay (Hayley Atwell), who inspires without condescending to him. In Eliza (Nell Williams), he finds a girl to set his pulse racing and share his dreams. Javed, Roops, and Eliza literally dance in the streets with Springsteen lyrics popping up on screen to create a rock fantasia that also stands as a rebuke to the racism.
