Assistance rolls out as stock losses continue to mount
The NSW Government has distributed more than 880 tonnes of fodder to bushfire affected farmers in south-east NSW, as the number of livestock reported killed or euthanised as a result of the fires rose to almost 5,200.
NSW Department of Primary Industries and Local Land Services staff, working in 18 field teams, were able to access firegrounds yesterday, identifying a further 2,400 livestock either killed in the fires or requiring humane euthanisation as a result of injuries.
The total number of livestock killed or euthanised as a result of bushfires across NSW this fire season is now almost 6,300.
Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said field crews were able to assess stock in the Cobargo, Bemboka, Wandella, Eurobodalla, Buckenbowra, Bombala, Exeter and Bundanoon areas.
“These fires have taken a huge toll on livestock, on farms and farm infrastructure,” Mr Marshall said.
“Farmers really care for their animals and in many cases they have managed them through months of crippling drought, so to see them affected like this is heartbreaking for the people involved.
“Crews are currently working with contractors to help people assess and manage their remaining stock and to appropriately bury stock where required.”
The livestock killed in the fire and filmed recently along Batlow Road have been buried.
Fodder distribution points have recently been established at Moruya, Bega and Cooma to allow farmers to pick up emergency supplies. Direct fodder deliveries have also been made under escort from the NSW Rural Fire Service.
“We know there is very high demand for emergency fodder in these areas and we are working to make that available for people as soon as it is safe for both staff and for the people travelling to pick it up,” Mr Marshall said.
