Victory verse

By Kersi Meher-Homji

Englishmen were beaten at Lord’s

By the batting and bowling of Bumrah

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah.

It was a day after India’s Swaraj

And it was all Mohammed Siraj.

It all started with openers Rohit and Rahul

Who sent the Englishmen to “Kabul”

With help from all-rounders Shami and Bumrah,

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah.

Behind and in front of wickets shone Pant

As bouncers were bowled by Sharma Ishant

There are many jewels; diamond, pearl and jade

But my choice will always be jade with an added ja

For the swashbuckling Jadeja.

Critics thought it was the end for Pujara and Rahane

But they scored precious runs at Lord’s, didn’t they?

Stealing runs from James Anderson

And his bowling partner Ollie Robinson.

England’s skipper Root hit a majestic ton

But Sam Curran bagged a king pair.

Virat’s heroes won at Lord’s

Will they enhance their lead

Next week at Headingly, Leeds?

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah.
