International anti-trafficking campaigner to speak in Sydney this week
A woman who rescues girls from brothels and other child workers from factories in India will address a seminar on human trafficking at Fairfield on Friday.
Ms Anita Kanaiya is co-director of Oasis India, a non government agency which helps rescue and rehabilitate trafficked people in India and educates communities about the tragedies of the flesh trade.
Her organisation rescued 300 children in one operation last year in Bangalore.
Oasis Global works a number of countries including Brazil and Zimbabwe.
Friday’s seminar is being organised jointly by the Community Relations Commission of NSW and the NSW Immigrant Women’s Health Service.
Commission Chair, Stepan Kerkyasharian, says: “The issue of human trafficking has become a world-wide phenomenon. We all need to be informed and raise our voices against it”.
“Ms Kanaiya work involves surveillance, investigation and dangerous raids of dark brothels.
“She now works with the police in the city of Bangalore on rescues. However the task of rehabilitating girls who have been trafficked is equally challenging”, Mr Kerkyasharian said.
The Manager of Immigrant Women’s Health Service, Dr. Eman Sharobeem says: “All over the world people are trapped in human trafficking and forced marriage, a violation of their human rights.
“Children, migrants and women are most at risk, thus Australia is not invulnerable and as a community we need to be informed and get involved. This event is a one off opportunity to learn more from a knowledgeable activist like Anita”, she said.
The seminar will take place on Friday 16 August 2013, at 4.3 pm at Fairfield RSL Club, 14 Anzac Avenue Fairfield NSW 2165
