Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi and Nepalese speaking staff for NSW Government services
NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell says more customers accessing NSW Government services through the new 24 hour, 7 day a week telephone service ”“ 13 77 88 ”“ will be able to receive assistance in their native language.
Mr O’Farrell says more than half of staff employed at the Service NSW Contact Centre in Parramatta speak at least one language other than English.
“We currently have 40 staff undergoing the necessary training to begin taking calls from people requiring government services,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“Within that group 23 staff speak a second language including Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Filipino, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Arabic, Italian, Persian, Dari, Spanish, Castilian, Portuguese, Swahili, Tongan and Samoan.
“The Contact Centre is due to open at 5pm on Friday the 30th of August 2013 and will initially take enquiries from across NSW registering a birth, death or marriage.
“The call centre will be based at Parramatta in the heart of Western Sydney, and the initial workforce of 40 will eventually have 120 staff members.
“We’re proud to be creating jobs in Western Sydney as well as helping to make dealing with Service NSW, the NSW Government’s one-shop-stop initiative for government services, a smoother experience for customers,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“All calls to the former Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages will now be answered by a Service NSW representative and directed to the Contact Centre in Parramatta.
“Staff at the Parramatta call centre will initially only handle calls on births, deaths and marriages, however, we will continue to grow their capacity beyond these enquiries over the coming months,” Mr O’Farrell said.
Additionally, all staff will have access to the National Relay Service and the Telephone Interpreter Service.
