Avijit’s Saaz aur Aawaz sizzled
Kersi Meher-Homji was bedazzled
I never had the urge to dance solo in public as when listening to Rajesh Hegde’s mesmerizing rendition of “Maduban mein raadhika” ”“ climaxing with “padha-nee-saa, saa re nee saa padha-nee…”.
I could imagine Rajesh wowing a live audience on TV’s top show Australia Has Talent and receiving a standing ovation. With Avijit Sarkar as his tutor, he should, sooner than later.
Nor was Rajesh the only one to rock us to frenzy of delight. There was both energy and nostalgia in Avijit’s concert on December 7 as saaz harmonised aavaz.
Nostalgia was at its deepest when Ambika Sharma took us back to our childhood with “Yun to hamney laakh haseen dekhi hai, toomsa nahi dekha.”
The sing-along started with Ami Surti’s “Heer” and soon there was transformation from popular to classical as the pretty Indrani Kakoty delighted us with her magical voice which reached high notes with no sign of cracking.
This was followed by more nostalgia as Bharat Gohel rendered “Yaad kiya dil ne kahaan”, Rashmie Chandra and Will Bhatnagar the ever popular oldie and goldie duet “Dil tera deewana hai sanam … muhobat kee kasam, muhobat kee kasam” and Munish Verma taking us on a world-trip with “Zindagi ki safar mein”.
I must not forget to give a huge acclaim to the orchestra ”“ drums, string and wind instruments harmonising splendidly ”“ as also the chorus complimenting the singers. Bravo!
Aditi Junveja and Ajit Nayak concluded the concert with a rousing rendition of “Radha”.
Every number was hummable and I am still humming Poornima Bhat’s “Pardome rahney do.” All the artists and artistes just did not sing, they put their all in their singing.
We in the audience vicariously felt we were on the stage with Shailaja Chandra and Aditi Junveja introducing each musical item with knowledge and humour.
Behind the synchronizing of this talent was maestro Avijit Sarkar, the musician extraordinaire.
Encore Avijit and the Natraj Academy.
