Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail by an Indian court for killing a homeless man and running over and injuring three other people on a footpath in Bandra in 2002. The actor was charged with culpable homicide.

Khan had maintained that his driver was behind the wheel but the judge said that he actually was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Salman, who has appeared in close to a 100 Bollywood films, is one of the busiest star and this guilty verdict is a huge setback in his career. The sentence will affect many big film projects that Salman has on hand.

Indian television channels reported the actor broke down inside the court as the guilty verdict was announced.
