SBS’s Audio and Language Content Division is looking for an Executive Producer for the Malayalam Language Program. For the first time, SBS will commence broadcasting in the Malayalam language, from April 2013. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to be a part of launching a new language program for the Malayalam speaking community.

Candidates should have a background in journalism, experience in radio broadcasting and a good knowledge of the Malayalam community. The right person will be an effective communicator, with a sound knowledge and understanding of the Malayalam culture and issues, and possess proven experience in creating innovative radio broadcasting.

The role of Executive Producer includes responsibility of planning the Malayalam program, and ensuring consistent quality. Ideally you will have great attention to detail, demonstrate experience managing editorial content and program budgets, and a flair for being creative in a fast paced media environment. This role also involves creating and broadcasting content for the Malayalam speaking community and involves research, writing, producing, sub-editing, translating and presentation of content for radio, online and mobile.

Proficiency in written and spoken Malayalam and English is essential and successful applicants will be required to pass a language assessment. Proficient computer skills are also mandatory and these positions involve rostered shift work which may include evenings and weekends.
The successful applicant will need to undertake approximately 20 hours of technical training and SBS Induction and there is limited flexibility in relation to when the training sessions will be offered, predominantly Monday to Friday between 8am to 8pm.

Executive Producer – Malayalam Language Program

Reports to: Program Manager

Duty Statement

The Executive Producer is solely responsible for creating and broadcasting audio content in the relevant language to the required SBS standards and for ensuring that audio content produced by the relevant program complies with SBS’s Charter obligations, Codes of Practice, Editorial Guidelines and other relevant standards and formats.

The Executive Producer is also responsible for effectively utilising the budgetary and other resources allocated to the relevant language program. The main tasks may include:
Journalism and Content Production

1. Undertake a range of journalism and content production tasks to provide audio content, including:
a. plan, prepare, assess, research, write, produce, sub-edit, translate and/or script audio content for presentation including (but not limited to) international, national, homeland and local news, current affairs and other relevant content as required
b. generate, develop and foster content ideas for the relevant platform and language audience
c. establish, develop and maintain appropriate contact with correspondents (stringers and contributors) and other relevant stakeholders.
2. Co-ordinate work of others such as casuals & contributors as required.
3. Contribute to divisional objectives through participation in cross-language content and other initiatives.
Broadcasting and Online Delivery
4. Present audio content on-air (radio) (including carry out live interviews, talk-backs, other live coverage and outside broadcasts) and use/operate relevant on-air systems and equipment.
5. Ensure all relevant content scheduled is broadcast as required, including promos, advertising and information campaigns and/or sponsorship announcements in accordance with SBS Codes of Practice and Editorial Guidelines and other relevant policies.
6. As required, prepare, write/source/edit and upload audio content, text and pictures online, and maintain relevant language website (including updating and removing outdated content when appropriate) in accordance with the relevant online standards.
7. In collaboration with the Program Manager and where necessary assisting Quality and Standards Staff, monitor and evaluate the program’s audio content to ensure quality and compliance with editorial standards, and implement corrective actions when required.
