On Holi – Hindu Festival of colours

I send you my best wishes as you mark Holi – the Hindu festival of colour.

Holi is an opportunity to gather with family and friends to mark the joyful triumph of spring over the darkness of winter.

It is also a time to celebrate the strong friendship between Australia and India, particularly the people-to-people links we share.

There are around 400,000 members of the Indian Australian community and I pay tribute to the significant contribution they make to our country.

Modern Australian is unimaginable without them.

As a nation, we have found unity in our diversity, respect in our differences and have built a modern nation on the idea that anyone can get ahead provided they are prepared to “have a go”

I wish you an enjoyable Holi celebration.

The Hon Tony Abbott

PM Prime Minister of Australia

14 March 2014
