Important reminder for students and their parents

If you are receiving Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY Living Allowance as a dependant student, now is the time to ask your parents to update their details with Centrelink.

Department of Human Services General Manager Hank Jongen today reminded eligible students about the annual reassessment of their parents’ income and family assets.

“We use the Parental Means Test to make sure we are paying students at the right rate,” Mr

Jongen said.

“This is especially important in avoiding an overpayment, which may result in students incurring a debt.

“Parents with children receiving Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY Living Allowance as a dependant have until early November and late December respectively to update us with their income and family asset details.”

Last month, more than 100,000 families received letters advising parents to update their income and family assets.   Mr Jongen said each letter gives parents a unique code to enter using Centrelink Online Services, making the process quick and easy.

“Parents who are unable to provide their details online can phone Centrelink for more options on 132 490 for Youth Allowance or 1800 132 317 for ABSTUDY Living Allowance,” Mr Jongen said.

“It is important that parents provide their details accurately and on time.

“Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY Living Allowance for dependant students can be suspended if a parent’s income and family assets details are not received on time.

“Parents who are required to update their details will receive another letter reminding them of their obligations in mid-October.

“If a student payment is suspended due to a parent failing to update their details, it will be restored as soon as the information is received.”
