Victoria to be the Rail state

$3.9 billion = a new train every month for 10 years and 3,500 jobs

  • Immediate new order of another 12 X’Trapolis trains from Alstom in Ballarat
  • New order of 75 high capacity suburban trains, 24 country rail cars and delivers a new train every month for 10 years
  • New order of 75 E Class low floor trams
  • Creates 3,500 jobs in the manufacturing, supply and construction industries
  • Napthine Government building better public transport for a growing population

A re-elected Victorian Coalition Government will invest a record $3.9 billion to purchase 170 new trains and trams in the biggest rail order in 30 years, Premier Denis Napthine announced on November 9, 2014.

“From 1 July next year, a re-elected Coalition will deliver a new train every month for the next decade,” Dr Napthine said.

“The biggest order of rolling stock for more than 30 years will mean 3,500 jobs in the rail manufacturing, supply and construction industries.

“This bold and visionary initiative will establish Victoria as Australia’s Rail Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in the important manufacturing sector,” Dr Napthine said.

In addition to the massive train order, the Coalition will order 75 new E class low floor trams from Bombardier’s Dandenong South factory ”“ the biggest tram order in 15 years.

Dr Napthine said that if re-elected, the Coalition’s rail orders will include:

  • 12 new X’Trapolis trains from Alstom in Ballarat;
  • 75 new high capacity suburban trains;
  • 75 new E class trams; and
  • 24 new individual VLocity railcars (eight new three car trains in total).
