NSW Premier Mike Baird has announced his first official visit to India will take place this month to progress trade opportunities between the two countries.

Mr Baird will visit the Indian cities of Ahmedabad, New Delhi and Mumbai as part of the visit to take place from Saturday 10 January to Tuesday 13 January.

“We have strong cultural and historic ties to India and we are seeing major opportunities emerging as a result of our infrastructure plans, which will strengthen our business and trade relationship,” Mr Baird said.

“Two-way trade between NSW and India was valued at $1.8 billion last financial year. This has been stronger in the past and I’m determined to continue sending the message that NSW is open for business with India.

“In Ahmedabad, I will be signing a new Memorandum of Understanding that will open a new chapter in our relationship with the Indian state of Gujarat, particularly in the areas of education, water security, skills development and sustainable urban development.

“This agreement will bring to a successful conclusion talks that were initiated by former premier Barry O’Farrell, and former Chief Minister of Gujarat and now Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I look forward to meeting with Prime Minister Modi, following his visit to Sydney last November, to continue discussions on how NSW and India can assist each other in the delivery of our shared infrastructure plans.

“Prime Minister Modi has a trillion dollar plan to revitalise India while I’ve outlined the NSW Liberals & Nationals’ $20 billion plan to rebuild NSW, which the people of NSW will be asked to consider at the March State election.

“In New Delhi, I will meet with NSW delegates attending Australia Business Week in India to outline how the NSW Government is helping business overcome the cultural and legal obstacles of entering the Indian market.

“In Mumbai, I will meet with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to progress initiatives as part of our Sister State relationship that was formalised in 2012.

“I look forward to developing the NSW Government’s relationship with India and hope that our well established cultural connections can lead to greater cooperation in business, tourism and investment for the future prosperity of our citizens,” Mr Baird said.
