‘Lion’ earns six Oscar nominations, Best picture, Dev Patel as Best Supporting Actor and Nicole Kidman as Best Supporting Actress

Garth Davis’ emotional tale about an Indian-Australian man tracking down his birth mother in the movie ”˜Lion’ has won six Oscar nominations. The categories in which ”˜Lion’ got the nomination are: Best Picture, Best Support Actor ”“ Dev Patel, Best Supporting Actress ”“ Nicole Kidman, Best Original Music Score ”“ Dustin O’Halloran and Volker B., Best Writing Adapted Screenplay – Luke Davies and Best Cinematography ”“ Greig Fraser.

Another Australian movie that has earned six nominations is Mel Gibson’s ”˜Hacksaw Ridge’. Musical ”˜La La Land’ has swept away the Oscar floor with 14 nominations that include it as Best Picture and Best Actor ”“ Ryan Gosling. The other nominees for Best Picture are  Moonlight, Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, Hell or High Water, Lion, Fences, Hidden Figures  and  Hacksaw Ridge.

Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Actor in the film ”˜Lion’ which is based on the non-fiction book ”˜A Long Way Home’ by Saroo Brierly.

Kidman plays the adoptive mother of Saroo Brierley, a young man separated from his family in India who uses Google Earth to find his way home.

“I want to thank the Academy for all of the acknowledgements you have given this heartfelt film,” Kidman said.

“But, most importantly, I want to thank the Brierley family for putting themselves in such a vulnerable place and sharing their story with the world.

“And thanks to Garth Davis for putting his heart and soul into all of us”
