Multicultural Arts Victoria presents Mapping of Melbourne program

Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) presents the fifth edition of Mapping Melbourne, a series of multi-artform events from 1-17 December 2017 across Melbourne.

Partners including Arts Centre Melbourne, Malthouse Theatre, Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, No Vacancy QV, Testing Grounds and Temperance Hall will host exhibitions, theatre, music, dance, multi-media, workshops and live art interactions showcasing independent contemporary artists exploring the theme of Asia and identity.

Mapping Melbourne is a platform for strengthening arts networks between contemporary independent Asian artists across the Australasian region; building connections, seeding new work, establishing collaborative ongoing relationships and presenting challenging yet rewarding work.

MAV has engaged various artists from across Australia, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Thailand, Philippines and more for this extraordinary showcase of artistic innovation and multicultural representation in the arts that is often missing from mainstream attention.

“Mapping Melbourne provides locally based independent artists an opportunity to explore their Asian identity and to experiment with new collaborators to develop and present work that excites and challenges. The festival importantly incubates new Australian Contemporary art that links powerfully to the diaspora,” says Jill Morgan CEO, Multicultural Arts Victoria.

Mapping Melbourne will launch at the new MPavilion venue at Queen Victoria Gardens, St Kilda Road on Thursday 30 November, 6-9pm with live performances, music and artistic interaction. The launch will provide the audience with a sneak peek for the exciting weeks to come, and set the tone for this year’s program. The launch event features Mapping Melbourne artists Haiku Hands, Kojoe X Aaron Choulai, Club Ate and Yumi Umiumare.

The principal sponsors for Mapping Melbourne are City of Melbourne, Creative Victoria and the Australia Council for the Arts.
