Alas! Chandni is gone!

Veteran actor Sridevi passed away in Dubai at that age of 54   due to a massive cardiac arrest. The legendary actor was in Dubai with husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi Kapoor for Mohit Marwah’s wedding festivities. Her other daughter Jahnvi Kapoor was in Mumbai due to work commitments.

Following her sudden demise, many have been expressing their disbelief and condolences started pouring in on Twitter. Wrote Amitabh Bachchan, ” न जाने क्यूँ , एक अजीब सी घबराहट हो रही है !!”

Even Prime Minister Modi posted his condolences, “Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace.”

Fellow actor Kamal Hassan with whom she did her first movie, K Balachander’s  Moondru Mudichu,  said, “The music of  Moondram Pirai  is ringing in my ears. I drew joy from witnessing the transformation of this child from a young woman to a dignified wife and then to a loving mother. The fact that I have to witness this (her death) too is agonizing. My condolences to her loving family.”

A child artist, Sridevi was known as Baby Sridevi as she  played an infant Lord Muruga in her first movie  Kandhan Karunai at the age of 4. In  Bharathiraaja’s  Pathinaru Vayadhinile, a pastoral drama, Sridevi played the central role of the village beauty, then 13 years old, Mayil, with Kamal Haasan as a physically challenged Chappani and Rajinikanth as the scheming villain Parattai.

The film turned out to be a blockbuster hit. Sridevi, who had not yet established herself in the industry, threw caution to the winds, exhibiting the voluptuousness of her lithe frame, sending the front benchers into raptures of delight. Wellknown in the southern film industry Sridevi made her debut in the Hindi movies in ‘Julie’ in 1975

Not all her Hindi films did justice to her talent or versatility as they were mere potboilers focusing on entertainment. But there were notable exceptions like  Sadma  (the remake of  Moondram Pirai),  Mr India,  Chandni,  Chaalbaaz  (in a dual role with Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth),  Khuda Gawah  (again, playing dual roles of an Afghani mother and daughter, opposite Amitabh Bachchan),  Lamhe, and  Gumrah. Shekhar Kapoor’s Mr India made Sri Devi famous with her sexy number ‘Kaate nahi kate ye din ye raat’.

Padma Shri Award winner beautiful Sridevi had made a comeback recently with movies ‘Hinglish Vinglish’ and ‘Mom’. Mom, produced by husband Boney Kapoor and directed by newcomer Ravi Udyavar featured her in the lead as the mother of two children played by Pakistani actors Sajid Ali and Adnan Siddique. The film also saw Nawazuddin Siddique and Akshay Khanna sharing frames with her.

She proved that she was in a league of her own with a devoted fan following and had many projects planned in the coming future. No one can ever forget ‘Chandni’ as one wrote on twitter, ‘Chandni Chali Gayi’.
