PM Scott Morrison: We respect Sikh cultural traditions and faith

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s message on the occasion of 550th  Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak

Commemoration of the birth of Guru Nanak is a moment of deep significance for those of the Sikh faith and for all inspired by his teachings of honesty, equality and goodwill.  Sikhism is one of the fastest growing religions in Australia, with 125,000 adherents.

For many, the tenets of faith provide guidance and strength; Sikhism is also about community.  In Australia, we are fortunate to live in a land of acceptance and encouragement, where respect for different cultural and religious traditions is part of our national story.

This includes respect for the diverse traditions of India, the birthplace of the Sikh faith, and an important and natural partner for Australia in many different spheres.  I thank the Sikh community for your commitment to ensuring our nation remains a beacon of peace and harmony.  May all who are celebrating this moment find it a source of strength and inspiration.
