India to meet Australia in Women’s World Cup Final on Sunday

By Kersi Meher-Homji

What a coincidence! The first match in the current Women’s T20 World Cup) was between India and Australia on 21st February. The Final is between the same countries this Sunday.

The semi-final match between India and England at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday was abandoned due to heavy rainfall. India proceeded to Final because of their securing more points in Group A than England did in Group B.

Many felt that England was robbed because of this. But what can India do? One has to follow the rules. Like many, I felt that an extra day should have been kept in case of downpour. But a rule is a rule. Hope it is amended in future.

Also, India is the only team to win all their four matches in this World Cup, including a victory over the reigning champion Australia.

Said India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, “Unfortunate that we didn’t get a game, but there are rules and we have to follow them. Having reserve days in the future will be a great idea. From day 1, we knew we have to win all the games because in case the semis don’t happen, that would be hard for us. In that sense, credit to the team for winning all the games. Everybody is looking in great touch ”“ particularly Shafali and Smriti. They are giving us good starts and that helps.”

England’s devastated captain Heather Knight rued, “Really frustrating. Not the way we wanted the World Cup to finish for us. No reserve day, no chance of getting play, and ultimately that loss against South Africa cost us.”

The rain stopped after the India-England washout and Australia defeated South Africa by five runs to enter the Final.

This the sixth time Australia has entered the Final but it is the first time for India. Will India repeat her performance against the Aussies on the opening day of this World Cup?
