Diwali, Deepavali, Festival of Lights

It is a pleasure to send my warmest greetings to everyone celebrating Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, in NSW.

Diwali began as a harvest festival and is celebrated by people across the world rejoicing in the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

In NSW we enjoy Diwali as a colourful festival in its own right, revelling in the display of softly burning lamps, which are lit on the night of the new moon. Diwali will be celebrated differently this year due to COVID-19 and I would like to thank you for supporting the measures put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The Indian-Australian community in NSW has grown considerably in recent years, gaining influence in many fields, including academia, science, the professions, business and management.

The NSW Government also values the Indian-Australian community as a key supporter of our multicultural State’s social harmony and cohesion.
