Statue of Gandhi vandalized a day after it was installed in Melbourne

On November 12 a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was installed in presence of community leaders the statue unveiled by the Prime Minister Scott Morrison. The statue was installed at the Australian Indian Community Centre in Rowville donated by the government of India and handed over by the Melbourne Consul General Rajkumar.

Its a pity that the statue was vandalized the next day.

According to SBS news Scott Morrison condemned the attack saying that attacks on cultural monuments will not be tolerated. He said, “It is disgraceful and extremely disappointing to see this level of disrespect. Whoever has done this has shown great disrespect to the Australian-Indian community and should be ashamed.”

Victorian police said unknown offenders used power tools to decapitate the statue. Knox Crime Investigation Unit detectives are looking into the matter and have urged witnesses to come forward.

The 300,00 strong Indian community in Victoria as well as from rest of Australia are saddened to hear about the vanadalism.
